A restaurant owner who died after being hit by his own car during an alleged robbery while making deliveries in Stockport was honored.
Haji Mohammed Heydayatul Islam, known as Nowab Miah from Hyde, Tameside, was delivering a meal in the Romiley area last Friday when witnesses said he was run over while trying to prevent his car from being captured.
The 53-year-old was taken to hospital in critical condition and died on Sunday afternoon, police said.
His son Shaf Nowab wrote on Facebook: “I am sad to announce that my father, my mentor, my role model… unfortunately left this world surrounded by a close family.
“Many of you will be aware of the recent Romiley incident. My dad is who it happened to. He just made his last delivery for our restaurant before going home. I want to thank everyone in the church for their prayers and greetings, and I and my family really appreciate everything you have said. “
Local people started a GoFundMe page to raise money for family and charities. More than 480 people donated a total of £ 6,500, exceeding a goal of £ 1,000.
A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of robbery after police were called to report a street collision shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday. Detectives continue to search for a silver Mercedes that they believe has been stolen.
Ch Insp Liam Boden of the Greater Manchester Police Department said: “This is an extremely tragic case that has rocked the community and devastated a family. We believe others may have been involved in the incident and a number of investigations are still ongoing to help us find those responsible.
“We are still asking the public to provide information that could help us. Even the smallest information can prove important. Anyone who has seen a silver Mercedes in the area at this point or has since seen it under suspicious circumstances is asked to contact them. “
