One student hopes her award and story can inspire “other girls with similar backgrounds”.

Esha Mumtaz, a student at Stockport College, received the Young Student of the Year award at the Association of Colleges’ annual awards.

Esha came to Stockport College from her native Pakistan in 2017 as a newcomer to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers.

She spent four years studying health and social services for her GSCEs and BTEC, then worked in a nursing home and volunteered in a hospital during COVID.

Esha said, “I still can’t believe it! The other finalists were such great candidates. I want to thank all of my mentors in college. I come from an environment where girls don’t get a lot of opportunities to prove themselves. “By winning this award, I want to inspire girls out there, especially those from a similar place, that they are capable of great things. I am very excited to make my college proud.”

She said she was a student ambassador, vice chair of the Equality Council and student governor at Stockport College in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

James Scott, CEO and Principal of the College Group, said, “We are very proud of Esha and all that she has achieved since she came to us from Pakistan.

“We are very happy to have been part of her journey and to have supported her in becoming an accomplished learner and confident speaker.

“It is a privilege to have students like Esha among our student body and I would like to thank all of the staff who have been part of their journey and helped Esha win this prestigious national award. Very well done. “

Sally Dicketts, President of the Association of Colleges, said, “Every year the application level is extremely high, showing the fantastic work students are doing at colleges and the length of time it takes colleges to support their students.

“It’s especially amazing to see the achievements in such a tumultuous year and Esha Mumtaz has done amazingly well to be number one and should be extremely proud.”
