The Stockport bus station will close this weekend to make way for a new £ 120 million interchange

The Stockport bus station will close this weekend to pave the way for the construction of a new transportation hub worth £ 120 million.

The station will be closed starting Sunday (August 29th) and a temporary location on Heaton Lane will be replaced.

Chiefs of Transport for Greater Manchester and Stockport Council, the bodies behind the project, say passengers will continue to have a central bus hub throughout the project – and a travel business will be maintained in Mersey Square.

Heaton Lane Station is accompanied by a series of bus stops around Stockport city center to provide full bus service to passengers.

The site is now opening to be fully operational for schools to return next month, officials added.

“This is a landmark for the city center and our district as we finally say goodbye to the current train station, which has served us so well since it opened 40 years ago,” said Councilor David Meller, member of the Stockport Council’s cabinet for business and regeneration . .

“Many Stopfordians have been through it and the memories it conjures up will live on.

“Nevertheless, the current train station has had its time and Stockport Interchange promises to improve our city center with its new two-hectare park above it, while at the same time further anchoring Stockport’s commitment to sustainable and active travel.

“This is a really exciting time and the makeshift stops and bus stops along the road will ensure that full bus service continues while we are working on the Stockport Interchange.”

The new hub is due to open in 2024 and will enable new passenger facilities, barrier-free access and improved bus routes around Stockport city center.

In addition, there is a better connection to the train station, says TfGM.

During the construction of the main traffic hub, the Daw Bank will be reduced to a single lane and traffic will be allowed into the city center – and detours will be set up for road users coming from the city center.

Swaine Street will also be closed during construction, however access to TN Robinson’s car park will remain available at all times.

To aid traffic flow and reduce potential delays, the parking lots along Daw Bank will be removed, with alternative parking spaces in the Station Road parking lot and on the street on Exchange Street.
