Stockport Council will continue to provide free school lunch vouchers

Children who receive free school meals will again receive vouchers, the Stockport Council has announced.

Families eligible for free school meals and attending schools in Stockport, Greater Manchester, will receive the vouchers by the end of May thanks to additional funding from the central government.

Coupons will be emailed direct to families in the coming weeks, and families will not need to apply as the local council works with schools and colleges to determine who is eligible.

Those who do not have e-mail access will receive their vouchers by post.

Stockport Council Vice Chairman Tom McGee said, “With additional funding from central government, we have been able to offer this vital assistance.

“We know the vouchers are a valuable additional resource for many, while coronavirus restrictions have put additional pressure on household budgets.”

The vouchers complement other support services provided by Stockport communities, the volunteer sector and schools.

A program of activities to support children and young people during the summer holidays is also being developed.

Amanda Peers, Stockport Council Cabinet Member for Inclusive Neighborhoods, said, “We have given these agencies £ 200,000 to improve assistance to households who may otherwise not be eligible for assistance.

“We are working with a number of partners to develop a program of activities to support children and young people during the summer holidays.

“An initial range of activities will be available over Easter to support families and provide information about the summer program.

“Vacation activities will be the main offering for families who will receive free school meals in the future, and will provide children and young people with both positive activities and access to food.”

If you need immediate financial assistance, visit the council’s money advice and support pages or call the coronavirus hotline on 0161 217 6046.
