Stockport County boss Dave Challinor admits Carlisle United hold few secrets – because Paul Simpson’s son is on his staff!

Jake Simpson is head of performance at Edgeley Park having followed Challinor to the club from Hartlepool United.

Challinor referred to the family connection between the two clubs as he looked ahead to tonight’s game.

“It’s an important game, against a team flying high – and someone we know a lot about because Jake’s dad’s the manager,” Challinor said.

“We’ve got to produce a performance.”

Stockport picked up an impressive 2-0 win at Salford City on Saturday with ex-Carlisle frontman Paddy Madden among the goals.

He scored in each of his last four games for the 16th-placed Hatters.

“If you ask Paddy, he’s been a bit disappointed in terms of his general play but he’s got four in four,” Challinor said in a club interview.

“We need to keep him doing that.

“He had to do a different role for us in the second half [at Salford] in terms of just sitting there, but he’s massively important for us.”

While Carlisle will take a big traveling support to Edgeley Park tonight, Stockport can also boast strong backing, averaging 8,742 in home games so far since their return to the EFL.

Challinor said of County’s fans: “They’ve been brilliant.

“We haven’t always got the results we’ve potentially deserved, but that’s not through a lack of energy off the pitch, or on the pitch.

“They’ve traveled in their numbers and it was good to send them home with three points [on Saturday].

“It’s now a quick turnaround, back at Edgeley, and we’ve got to back it up.”

Challinor, whose assistant is former Blues defender Clint Hill, said he expected keeper Vitezslav Jaros to be fit to play tonight after he was subbed in the first half on Saturday with a shin injury.
