Santa in the station, Mr. Simms’ candy store and the Salvation Army Band on Merseyway can only mean one thing – it’s Christmas in Stockport.
But while the district’s festive vibe still abounds in 2021, those memories are from last Christmas – selected by readers of the Manchester Evening News.
The MEN asked residents what their fondest memories of Stockport were during the holiday season, and they picked a cornucopia of festive joy.

Despite the variety of memories, one really stood out – Santa Claus in the co-op.
Lisa Nelson said: “The sleigh ride in the co-op … I really thought I had moved!”
Sara Allen, Nicola Mullen, Janice Mcilvenny and Caron Smith agreed.
Caron said: “I will visit Santa Claus in the co-op.”
Gill Kelsall also advocates meeting Santa Claus. She said, “I took my daughters to see Santa at the co-op in the district in the 1980s.”
Picking something sweeter, Carol Chipcase explained that “Mr. Simms’ Candy Store” was her favorite place for Christmas.
Oliver Harrison also recalled a musical pastime: “The Salvation Army band on Merseyway while I went Christmas shopping with my mom and grandma.
“As a little boy it was very magical.”

Chrissy Wright shared Oliver’s enthusiasm for the Salvation Army and said, “The Salvation Army band plays outside of our home.”
However, some residents opted for something that everyone wants from Santa Claus – the end of the pandemic.
James O’Neill wrote, “When Covid Didn’t Exist.”
Remembering a great place to find Christmas gifts, Karen Grundy mentioned the joys of “shopping in Woolies”.
Chelsea Heywood remembered “Brinny’s Christmas Tree” – nicknamed “The Twig” in 2015 after it looked threadbare.
Some chose simpler but equally charming memories.
David Howarth thought of ‘Cobdens on a Friday Night’.
Ian Thompson was just joking, “I’ll leave when all of my shopping is done.”
Helen Cheetham joined in the festive banter and added: “Use the empty market stalls as a nice place to relax after a few drinks.”
