Work to construct a new emergency and urgent care campus at a Stockport hospital has received the go-ahead.
Tilbury Douglas will lead on the £30m contract to extend Stepping Hill Hospital in Greater Manchester by 300 square metres.
The site will include a new children’s emergency department, and additional mental health and medical emergency care facilities. When complete, it will also include a larger ambulance and patient reception area.
Construction is poised to begin later this year and is scheduled for completion in March 2024.
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Karen James said the decision would help to address the “continued increase” in patient numbers at the hospital.
“This will mean a massively improved site for emergency and urgent care services, where clinical excellence can flourish,” she added. “These new facilities will help us to provide the safe, good-quality care that these patients need.”
Development consultancy Lichfields secured planning approval from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) on behalf of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.
Lichfield’s senior planner Imogen Zulver said: “The new campus opens a fresh chapter for quality healthcare provision in the South Manchester area, which has been designed to center around patients’ needs and provide a state-of-the art facility that will benefit the community for decades to come.”
The contract represents the latest hospital project to be secured by Tilbury Douglas, which also snapped up an expansion job at Dorset County Hospital last month.
The role there will include the construction of a new emergency department building and a critical care unit. The job was awarded through the ProCure22 framework.
Last month, Tilbury Douglas became a standalone contractor once again, after 20 years as part of Interserve Group.
