A charity was recognized for its healthy and climate-friendly food culture.

The Seashell Trust’s Royal Manchester School, based in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, Greater Manchester, was awarded the Bronze Food for Life award for its efforts to change the school’s food culture.

The school is a national charity that supports children and young adults with complex disabilities.

It has partnered with Food for Life, which works with schools, kindergartens, hospitals and nursing homes to promote healthy eating, and developed a new program to receive the award.

For Seashell, this included meeting farm animals, cooking and participating in food-growing activities, and improving the school’s menu.

The school’s catering team, led by manager June Turnock, worked with local suppliers to add more local and ethical food to the menus and served seasonal items on the menu, 75% of which is cooked in-house.

Hannah Hill, Seashell Facility Manager, said, “We are delighted with this recognition of Seashell’s food culture and the healthy diets produced by the catering team.

“June and her team had to work extra hard to meet the criteria for this award while meeting the unique needs of our student cohort, which was sometimes no easy task.

“I would like to thank June, her team, her staff, students and parents who all contributed to this success.”
