Stockport Exchange improves its active travel information with the introduction of a Brompton Bike Hire Dock.
The £ 145 million Stockport Exchange redesign, jointly carried out by Stockport Council and national urban renewal, Muse Developments, will be part of the council’s Mayoral Development Corporation and will be at the center of the £ 1 billion city center redevelopment program stand.
On the new solar-powered bicycle dock, which starts in summer, there are eight docks and 12 bicycles outside the Holiday Inn Express in the immediate vicinity of the Stockport train station.
Brompton Bikes are specifically designed for urban cycling. Small wheels mean quick acceleration and increased maneuverability. Because they are foldable, they can easily be stowed in all means of public transport, in the trunk of a car or under a desk.
To start with, users simply register online, credit their account and reserve a bike either on the website or by SMS before they pick it up.
Cllr David Meller, Stockport Council Cabinet Secretary for Business and Regeneration, said, “It is absolutely fantastic news that we have brought the Brompton Bike Hire Dock to the heart of our city.
“It will give a huge boost to residents, workers and visitors who want to explore what our great city has to offer.
“This program will also help the local council achieve one of its main goals in its 10-year Stockport Walking and Biking Roadmap, which focuses on providing connections to the city’s public transportation hubs. The Brompton program near the train and bus stations is a great way to accomplish this.
“This new venture with Brompton also builds on our commitment to community cycling through our Mayoral Challenge Fund programs and shows the council’s ambitions to change the minds of our Stockport residents.”
Tom Webber, Senior Development Surveyor at Muse, said, “Stockport Exchange is already one of the most connected business centers in the area, and the new Brompton Bike Hire dock here will make it even easier and greener for people to move around Stockport and Greater getting around Manchester.
“The Brompton brand and ethos are widely recognized and fit seamlessly with Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) efforts to be the newest, greenest, coolest affordable neighborhood in Greater Manchester.”
After completion of the work on the wider Stockport Exchange, up to 375,000 m² of office space and 28,000 m² of commercial space will be available.
