Wealdstone fell to Stockport for the sixth consecutive loss

A struggling Wealdstone team was eventually pushed aside by Stockport County in a 4-0 loss at Edgeley Park on May 1.

A determined Stones lasted 53 minutes before two goals in two minutes from Ryan Croasdale and Alex Reid made a pleasant second half for the hosts.

Reid doubled his record four minutes left before John Rooney scored a free kick in added time.

Wealdstone boss Stuart Maynard made two changes to the team that had lost to Yeovil Town just 48 hours earlier. Charlee Hughes and Sonny Lo-Everton came in for the injured duo of Alex Dyer and Dennon Lewis who fell on the bench.

After an energetic start from the hosts, Wealdstone got into the game, first causing a scare when Lo-Everton played in Jacob Mendy in the Stockport area, but Hatter’s defender James Jennings got a crucial block to help the Stones’ Spanish winger deny.

Just a minute later, the Stones threatened again when Hughes landed an overhead kick at the end of Michael Phillips’ cross, but the striker failed to fully connect and Ben Hinchiffe rallied.

Harry Cardwell had a great chance for the hosts after half an hour and had a free header on goal from six yards, but Jake Askew in the Stones goal had a great reflex to shorten the bounce.

Spurred on by their first-half performance, the Stones were forgiven for leaving Edgeley Park with the points, but those thoughts weren’t dampened until eight minutes into the second half.

Askew scored not one but two fantastic saves to deny Cardwell first and then Paddy Madden, but the ball fell on Croasdale on the edge of the area, which shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.

And a minute later, the visitor task became even more difficult. Dan Wishart was expropriated near the corner flag by Stockport sub Elliot Newby, who then crossed to Reid, who typed in at close range.

18-year-old Wealdstone keeper Askew rescued again and recovered from his battered corner, which led straight into the path of Stockport skipper Liam Hogan, who was trying to score the goal. However, the young keeper recovered with a reaction stop to tip the ball over.

With ten minutes to go, Reid warned the Stones again and shot just past the long post from the edge of the box. In the 86th minute, he doubled his balance and clung to the end of a long ball. His effort greatly distracted Phillips, who then defeated Askew at his near post to seal the game.

There was still time for another goal for the hosts. Rooney turned a 25-yard free kick from the textbook over the wall and into the top corner.

Wealdstone Academy players Tecane Shrowder and Elijah Hearn both saw some injury-time action as they replaced first team members Hughes and Phillips.
